The setting: Hajin Exclusion Zone
Hajin is a triangle at the Russian border with the Korean Peninsula, a recovery zone of abandoned military technology left behind by the campaign's events. You play a shadow CIA asset deniably deployed into it. The official deep dive (June 6, 2026) lays out the region: a fallout reactor site, a prison complex, Hajin City, a military base and rural borderlands.
The FOB is the loop
Everything hangs on your Forward Operating Base, which evolves as your DMZ level grows:
The 3D Printer synthesizes gear: armor plates, night vision, killstreaks, ammo and backpacks. The official blog also carries dedicated sections on loot, crafting, weapon condition and variants, and recovery; the detailed numbers land with launch.
Three ways to run an infiltration
- Story Missions: the multi-step narrative thread through the zone.
- Dynamic Operations: shifting objectives, sabotage, rescue, HVT elimination and intel theft among them.
- Side Ops and free roam: when you just want to loot and pick your own fights.
A world that moves without you
Weather (storms, fog, overcast) changes visibility and opens or closes routes. Emergent enemies and escalating threats keep the map from settling into a fixed script. No two deployments open the same way.

PvP: optional, and legible
PvP exists but is structured to be readable: bounty contracts, dog tags, a Notoriety system and Proximity Chat. Players on kill streaks get marked and hunted. You can complete a deployment without firing a shot at another player, if you accept the risk of others not extending you the same courtesy.
Progression that stays yours
All DMZ XP feeds a separate DMZ Rank, with per-operator traits and dedicated Active Duty slots. Infinity Ward's studio leadership has stated the design intent plainly: DMZ does not replace Warzone's battle royale; it is a full-featured mode inside Modern Warfare 4, independent of the battle royale line. How the modes relate. For the arena side of the game, the multiplayer overview; for where the zone's backstory comes from, the campaign.
